Texas Coast Guard choppers swooped in to rescue 23 people by 2030 GMT (0630 AEST) today, most of them uninjured, after Ike crashed into Galveston island as a hurricane, a guard spokesman told AFP. With 16 helicopters in the air "so far the Coast Guard has rescued 23 people in the past two and one half hours; 16 in the Galveston (island) area and seven in the Port Arthur/Orange area," Petty Officer David Schuhlen said.
